What is a spinal cord injury?

To understand a spinal cord injury, you should be aware of certain details about the spinal anatomy. The spinal cord is a long, thin bundle of nerves that extends from the base of your brain down the middle of your back to slightly above your waist. If you suffer any type of trauma to the spinal cord, it will prevent the bundle of nerves from operating properly. It may cause a complete or incomplete loss of feeling or/and function in the parts of the body and may even cause paralysis. According to a study done at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, approximately 12,000 people per year survive accidents with some form of spinal cord injury.
